Meet the Optometrist

Dr. Gail Akerman

Dr. G. Akerman obtained a double major in Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry graduating with cum laude honors in 1994. She worked in cancer research at Maimonides Hospital from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Akerman later graduated from SUNY College of Optometry in New York City in 1999 with honors as a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa international optometric honor society. She practiced under a corneal specialist with experience in LASIK pre-op and post-op, cataract surgeries, and glaucoma management. Dr. Akerman was the on-call OD at Wyckoff Hospital in Queens NY before moving to Arizona, where she practiced full scope optometry with TPA for 8 years. In 2010, she and her family moved to Canada where she started a new practice at Costco. She enjoys yoga, traveling, and spending time with her twin boys and daughter.

Dr. Curtis Akerman

Dr. C. Akerman obtained his honors Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo in 1995 and graduated from SUNY College of Optometry in New York City in 1999. Dr. Akerman practiced in New York with top glaucoma specialists who helped develop and test the OCT/GDx in the early stages of its development. In addition, he practiced in Arizona for 8 years in a managed care setting specializing in CRT and scleral contact lenses. Dr. Akerman has been an active volunteer, traveling to Nicaragua to provide eye exams and glasses to people living in underprivileged areas. He enjoys playing and coaching hockey, skiing and travelling.

Dr. Melissa Oliver

Dr. Oliver received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo, graduating with Dean's List recognition. She was also the recipient of the Ontario Association of Optometry Award for Excellence in Patient Management in her graduating year. Following her optometry training, Dr. Oliver participated in a three-week optometric mission trip to Ecuador and in the Opening Eyes program for Olympic athletes at the Special Olympics. Dr. Oliver is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and has an interest in Dry Eye Disease, Diabetic Retinopathy and Low Vision Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury. In her spare time, she enjoys coaching and playing hockey in Oakville, crossfit, camping, reading and cooking.

Dr. Marlene Stepanians 

Dr. Stepanians received her honors Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto majoring in Biology and double minor in Sociology and Psychology. Additionally she completed a year of extensive research in visual perception and cognition within the geriatric population. She later obtained her Doctor of Optometry degree from New England College of Optometry in Boston. Dr. Stepanians had the opportunity to work in many community health centers within underprivileged populations during her time in Boston. She also worked in a Veterans Hospital focusing on ocular disease and geriatric populations. During her time in New England, she had the privilege of working with a general ophthalmologist co-managing glaucoma, post-op cataract and oculoplastic surgeries. Dr. Stepanians has an interest in Dry Eye Disease, myopia control and contact lenses. In her spare time she enjoys going to the gym, camping, hiking and travelling.
